Sosa blasts No. 600 off former team
Jun 21, 2007. source : tefd ARLINGTON -- Rangers designated hitter Sammy Sosa made history in the fifth inning Wednesday night when he hit the 600th home run of his Major League career.
Sosa hit his historic shot off of Cubs pitcher Jason Marquis with two outs and nobody on base. With the count 1-2 and flashbulbs popping all over the ballpark, Sosa drove a pitch from Marquis high and deep to right-center and into the Rangers bullpen.
He circled the bases as he received a standing ovation from the crowd. He was greeted and mobbed by his teammates at home plate. He went back to the dugout but subsequently came back for two curtain calls.
The home run was measured at 395 feet and was retrieved by pitcher Akinori Otsuka. It gave the Rangers a 5-1 lead and Frank Catalanotto followed with a home run right after him.
Sosa is the fifth player in Major League history to hit 600 home runs in his career. He joins Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays in that exclusive company.
